Who We Are
We are a community coalition comprised of members from the Council Bluffs/Omaha Metro and surrounding area. PMP is committed to providing education and increasing awareness to help individuals and communities stay ahead of substance abuse.
We value everyone’s contribution to prevention, treatment and recovery, and we’re passionate about getting it done right. Our vision is to empower people to take action against substance abuse. We are PMP – Prevention Means Progress, and that means staying ahead of substance abuse.
- Prevention is more cost-effective than intervention, treatment, and incarceration
- Addiction is a treatable disease
- People can and do recover
- Communities are capable of making positive social change
- Entire communities are affected by substance abuse
- Effective community collaboration will create a healthy substance-free environment
PMP was initially formed in 2004 under the name Partners for Meth Prevention by joining two separate coalitions who were working on ways to prevent meth use and abuse. We are a successful, stand-alone coalition that works collaboratively with many other agencies in Pottawattamie County and the Greater Metro Area. We were initially comprised of representatives from eight not-for-profit organizations from Pottawattamie County/Council Bluffs. Today our partnerships include 40 organizations/agencies in both Iowa and Nebraska and our focus has shifted to include all areas of substance abuse prevention.
Our hope is that people will come to understand addiction is a treatable disease that can be managed with proper treatment and recovery plans, and that people with addiction are not bad people; they are people like you and I who made a choice to use a drug and now face a disease—addiction. We also want people to realize that addiction is treatable and people can and do recover. There is hope for people struggling with addiction, even meth addiction. Additionally, preventing drug abuse means building strong anti-drug attitudes among adults and youth alike. Our hope is that through our strategies, we can build these attitudes. We are very proud of our partners and all we are doing to help individuals and families who are affected by addiction. However, we know there is still much more to do. With your help we can make our vision for a healthy, substance-free community become a reality.
